FP076-0 Postgraduate Pre-sessional English (4 weeks)
Introductory description
Students will be building a foundation of generic academic English skills in preparation for the following 6 week PSE which will be discipline specific.
Module aims
To develop student confidence with receptive and productive skills.
To establish a solid foundation of academic English skills.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
The syllabus has been designed to maximise practice in academic receptive and productive skills. The course will include:
Listening to authentic academic talks and lectures
Reading authentic academic texts
Participating in academic seminar discussions
Producing written academic texts
Practice in these areas will result in students developing in their confidence in their ability to participate fully in academic life in the UK
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Listen to academic spoken genres in order to identify the genre conventions and main content points.
- Read academic texts in order to identify the genre conventions and main content points.
- Write short academic texts which incorporate material from listening and reading.
- Present and discuss ideas based on material from listening and reading.
