PO3A2-30 War in the Twenty-First Century
Introductory description
Leon Trotsky was famously reputed to have said, ‘You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you’. In the early twenty-first century, this statement seems to be more relevant than ever. Since 11 September 2001, conflict has spread or intensified across Asia and Africa with increasing terrorist attacks in Europe. These conflicts have accentuated the trend, traceable to the end of the Cold War, when conventional interstate warfare has been increasingly replaced by global ethnic and religious and hybrid conflict often conducted by sub-national groupings, typically in urban setting. This course examines the transformation of war and the armed forces in the twenty-first century.

This course aims to give an advanced introduction to contemporary debates about war and the armed forces. It will define the distinctive character of warfare in the 21st century through the investigation of a selection of critical contemporary themes.
